General Information

Lagodekhi National Park, located in eastern Georgia near the border with Azerbaijan and Russia, spans over 24,000 hectares and is one of Georgia’s oldest and most pristine protected areas. The park features diverse landscapes, ranging from dense, lush forests to alpine meadows and rocky gorges. It is characterized by dramatic elevation changes, from 590 to 3,500 meters, offering breathtaking views of the Greater Caucasus Mountains.

Lagodekhi is home to rich flora, including ancient beech, hornbeam, and oak forests, alongside rare plant species like the Lagodekhi lily. Its diverse fauna includes East Caucasian turs (mountain goats), brown bears, lynxes, and wolves, as well as over 150 bird species, including eagles and falcons.

How to get there

From Tbilisi

By Car:

  • The drive from Tbilisi to Lagodekhi takes around 2.5-3 hours (approx. 160 km). Follow the S5 highway east toward Telavi, then head northeast through Gurjaani and the town of Lagodekhi.

By Minibus (Marshrutka):

  • Take a minibus from Tbilisi’s Isani Bus Station to Lagodekhi. The journey takes around 3 hours.
From Kutaisi

By Car:

  • The drive is about 6-7 hours (approx. 370 km). Head east on the E60 highway to Tbilisi, then follow the same route via Telavi to Lagodekhi.

By Minibus:

  • Take a bus from Kutaisi to Tbilisi, then transfer to a minibus heading to Lagodekhi.

Entry and Permits
A small fee is required for entry. Fees may vary for locals and foreign visitors, so check at the entrance. Special permits may be needed for certain trails or activities. Obtain these at the Lagodekhi Information Centre.
Best Time to Visit
The best times to visit Lagodekhi National Park are in spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) when the weather is mild, and the landscapes are at their most beautiful. Summer (June-August) is also a popular time for hiking, but be prepared for warmer temperatures.
Winter visits are possible, and the snow transforms the park into a magical winter wonderland, perfect for snowshoeing and winter trekking.
Accommodation
Designated camping areas are available for a more immersive experience in nature. Various guesthouses and lodges are located in Lagodekhi town, offering comfortable stays. A rustic hut for overnight stays, accessible via hiking trails.
Wildlife Safety
Observe wildlife from a safe distance; do not approach or feed animals. Stick to marked trails to minimize impact on the environment and avoid encounters with wildlife. While bear encounters are rare, remain cautious, make noise while hiking, and store food securely.
